While I’m all about using color to add a pop of pizazz to any outfit, sometimes there’s nothing better than (not so) basic black and white.  The classic combo works year-round but I’m especially loving the polished Fall/Winter looks this palette inspires.

Grace Coddington’s Fashion Sketches

I recently ordered Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington’s new book Grace: A Memoir, and I really can’t wait for it to come and to start reading it.   The book reveals one of her hidden talents, sketching.  “She is well-known for sketching looks as they come down the runway from her front-row perch during fashion week, but her drawings also take on a distinctly personal, and often humorous, tone. From childhood memories to her first day on the job as both a model and fashion editor to her big loves (including, of course, her cats), these remarkable, hand-drawn pictures reveal yet another dimension to an already famously fascinating woman.”

How adorably quirky.  So excited to learn more about her!

Holiday Heels

So sorry to all of you Christmas-tree-decorating Instagrammers that I follow, but this Christian Louboutin tree is by far the best one I’ve seen this holiday season.  So glam.

Bauble Craving

Dara Ettinger.  That set of stackable rings in the middle needs to be on my finger.  Various gems available at Shopbop, Neiman Marcus, & Max&Chloe.

Take a Look

How cool is Prada’s Real Fantasies Spring-Summer 2012 “lookbook?”

The mixed media masterpiece is the handmade work of Jereon Koolhaus and Lok Jansen under the direction of James Lima, who has also made fashion films for Alexander Wang and Versace.  Below are some stills from the video lookbook, which are honestly works of art all their own.

The video lookbook follows the well-received Real Fantasies Fall-Winter 2011 MotionBook, which is definitely worth a look if you haven’t yet.

Paradise Prints

Prints are one of many elements of fashion that are hugely subjective and trend-driven.  I tend to buy printed items at cheaper, trendy mass retailers such as Forever 21 and H&M because I’m usually sick of the fabric within months.  This will undoubtedly be the case with the Hawaiian and tropical prints that are popping up on the runway (see: Stella McCartney Resort 2012) and in stores.  It’s all about palm trees, pineapples, toucans, and (mainly) hibiscus flowers.  A step beyond regular florals, these prints are a tad quirky, beyond reminiscent of Tommy Bahama, and make me really realize how badly I need a vacation.

What do you think?  Are Hawaiian and tropical prints a do or a major don’t?

Coachella Street Style

Now that both weekends of Coachella are behind us (who’s as excited as I am not to see Coachella on Facebook for a LONG while, or at least until they release next year’s line-up?), here are some of the most inspiring street style looks from the music festival that I’ve seen around the web:

Loathe These Loubs

{Christian Louboutin – Snorkeling 100 Neoprene and Leather Ankle Boots, $895}

Just in case you want to scuba dive in stilettos. I mean… Christian Louboutin, I live by the general assumption that you can do no wrong. But bright yellow neoprene scuba boots? I am sure they’re comfortable but dang they’re ugly. What exactly were you thinking, shoe buyers of Net-a-porter.com?

NARS x Thakoon

Currently loving NARS’ nail polish collaboration with fashion designer Thakoon.  The six eye-popping shades are inspired by the colors found at Indian spice markets.  So bright and happy – not as electric as the now-sickening neons but still so fun for summer.  I just can’t decide which is my favorite.  Get ’em May 1st, or available for pre-order on Nordstrom.com now.
